Q&A: Kevin Bradshaw and Phil Terrett, Partners at MTGP
MTGP helps create and manage leading-edge digital content and enabling technology ventures through the provision of growth management, creative strategy and technology visioning expertise. MTGP's high profile team of five partners is distributed globally across Europe, North America and Asia.
Kevin Bradshaw provides the overall strategic vision for MTGP. Kevin played a major role in the design and implementation of Genie Internet before founding Digital Bridges - for whom he was CEO until October 2001 before establishing MTGP.
Phil Terrett was COO of Vesta Wireless Works, part of the VC Vesta Group, that included a 9-month assignment as CEO of Cybiko Inc - a wireless peer-to-peer company. Prior to Vesta, Phil spent 14 years at Nortel where he led the organisation's 3G applications and services team.
Q. What was the concept behind establishing MTGP?
A. During our earlier careers we had both met with a number of high-profile individuals, each of whom shared a similar approach and had been working in-and-around new ventures - and had reached a stage in our respective careers where that experience could really be leveraged to great effect collectively though a business like MTGP.
We therefore brought together our skills to enable us to look across an entire market entirely objectively and without restriction, and to spot the gaps - and the opportunities within it.
So, our whole raison d'etre with MTGP is how do you take an idea, and then create a company around it?
Q. It's an interesting concept. What value does MTGP bring to it's clients?
A. We are essentially a foundry for new companies or new divisions within existing companies. Our aim is to provide assistance that is strategic to an organistion but very much the product of experience in building real businesses.
So, in a nutshell, we find, then refine and work on ideas - helping our clients work through the questions they have and to reach the right decision: the goal being to create a business proposition that is genuinely compelling. We then help them build the team to turn the idea into a company and of course, ultimately help it t create products.
We also deliver broader-based consulting activity in the wireless media market, addressing issues such as: what media technologies will become available and are appropriate, what services will be possible, and what are the appropriate business models for addressing the consumer market.
Q. You mention that MTGP can spot the gaps in the market. Any 'hot' areas right now?
A. The growth market is in content. The downloadable games market is going really well for example. People have the phones, are happy to download, and are prepared to pay for it.
Other areas of involvement include WiFi services (the next step beyond just connectivity) and wireless peer-to-peer networks.
Q. What about the technologies that are required to really drive mobile entertainment take up?
A. For mobile entertainment to be truly successful it must be created, distributed and managed effectively. A lot of people would say better networks are required and to an extent that's true....but our view is that the technology challenges are mostly about devices.
Most of the technologies required basically already exist, they just need to be refined and packaged into appealing consumer propositions.
